I also ran a demo of seagate's recovery software which told me that a read error had been encountered, before it too stopped scanning. It just simply stopped responding and froze. Seatools diagnostics crashed in a similar manner but no real error message ever came. I couldn't really find anything concrete about what it meant except that it had to do with video files. 'COM Surrogate has stopped working' which some other sites had blamed on Vista. Upon running chkdsk using the 'tools' tab under drive properties it ran for awhile before encountering an error. Unfortunately it appears I may have to use a professional service if I want to salvage the data from this drive. Then try the SeaTools Diagnostics (Maxtor is now owned by SeaGate) to see if any errors are reported. Meanwhile, when it connects and shows up, try running chkdsk from a Command Prompt: Is it making any odd noises? When it starts making clicking or grinding sounds, that is big trouble. It sounds like the drive might be dying, but let's not have a funeral just yet. I would greatly appreciate any help you could give me. I tried using the hard drive on a desktop computer with the same results. Within the folders that worked correctly directories would again be correct, but when i tried to copy their files to my laptop nothing happened.
Some folders were listed as 'empty' and when i clicked on them the error message 'The file or directory is corrupted or unreadable' popped up. I could open the drive and all of the primary folders were present but only certain folders were actually functioning. It even recognized that 165/279 GB were being used. After unplugging/rebooting/etc a few times the drive was correctly recognized as the E: Drive. I did not format the drive to prevent data loss. The drive would appear in the 'My computer' section of my laptop but the drive was labeled 'RAW' and when i clicked on it I was given the message that it needed to be formatted before it could be used. Today it stopped recognizing data within the hard drive. I own a Maxtor 3200 external hard drive which has worked well until recently. Without 'taking the power out' all drivers are there and it works. 2: after a while or doing data tranfers on my harddisk if I then plug it into a usb 2.0 (im using a usb 7 hub.) on my comp. 1: I plug in my Maxtor basics personal storage 3200 on a usb 1.0 on my comp.
